All you have to do to pass that part of is to hug the upper border of the screen and shoot non-stop, letting the missiles take care of the enemy core.

And congrats on the 1CC!
:DEdwardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17491361099947592597noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8742813618758333424.post-15041454084977110252018-07-11T16:35:25.751-03:002018-07-11T16:35:25.751-03:00Hey Edward - I know this is an old one, but I was ...Hey Edward - I know this is an old one, but I was wondering: I just did my first 1CC of Axelay on Normal, and I noticed when I got to the final boss, during his third? phase when he makes clones of Axelay, the clones fire shots and missiles whenever the player does. When I fired both at the same time, I couldn't see any way to dodge, and ended up always dying. In the end I had to reset my controls to separate the attack types so I could stick to one or the other to survive that phase.

I notice you said you map both shot and missle to the same button - did you not experience this problem? You don't seem like the kind of guy who would feed lives through an entire pattern :)Yourselfhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02394331107825059031noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8742813618758333424.post-22999382381719884882014-02-28T11:29:26.247-03:002014-02-28T11:29:26.247-03:00Interesting observations, I would never know this ...Interesting observations, I would never know this since I'm not really into technicalities and stuff!
I played Mickey Mania in the past, but I never noticed the effect similarity.Edwardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17491361099947592597noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8742813618758333424.post-90328166161388697152014-02-28T08:05:27.532-03:002014-02-28T08:05:27.532-03:00When Axelay launched I was a happy 14 years-old Ge...When Axelay launched I was a happy 14 years-old Genesis owner, and I saw the review on a magazine I bought (and still usually buy). The screenshots were so fu**ing insanely gorgeous that whenever I flipped through that issue, had to skip the pages of the review. I just couldn't stand knowing that I couldn't put my hands on that thing. When Donkey Kong Country launched I couldn't resist anymore and bought a SNES with DKC and a copy of Axelay :)

And now some technical trivia:

Despite popular belief, the fact is Axelay didn't use the famous Mode 7 at all. The "barrel" look on vertical stages was accomplished by a raster effect, reprogramming the vertical offset of the playfield on each scanline through HDMA. There are three proofs:

1. There are two layers of parallax scrolling. Mode 7 could only handle one layer.
2. The zoom effect is only on the vertical direction, not in the horizontal. This is what gives the "barrel" look instead of the classic flat surface of Mode 7
3. The same effect is used in the Genesis version of the game Mickey Mania (also on the SNES version) on the chase stage, which hadn't Mode 7.
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8742813618758333424.post-1754235993334065352011-07-25T10:12:00.056-03:002011-07-25T10:12:00.056-03:00That's a major feat, man, congratulations!
